D.R.E. License Information

Licenses are issued for a four-year period by the Department of Real Estate (DRE) and should be renewed prior to the expiration date listed on the license. As a reminder, the DRE mails a renewal form to the licensee’s mailing address of record approximately 90 days prior to the license expiration date. The form is sent as a courtesy only and non-receipt of the form does not relieve the licensee from the responsibility of renewing the license.

Salesperson License Renewal (Home Study and Online)

Salesperson License – First Renewal

After Original License Issuance on or After October 1, 2007

1.) Must complete 45 hours of DRE-approved continuing education consisting of:

• Each of the following 3-hour mandated courses:
  • Ethics
  • Agency
  • Trust Fund Handling
  • Fair Housing
  • Risk Management

2.) A minimum of 18 hours of courses approved under the category of consumer protection (includes financing, land use regulation, disclosure, agency, capital formation for development, fair practices, appraisal and valuation, landlord/tenant, energy conservation, environmental regulation, tax, probate, governmental programs, business opportunities and mineral, oil and gas conveyancing) and

3) Remaining 12 hours related to consumer services and/or consumer protection.

Salesperson (and Broker) – Second and Subsequent Renewals

Must complete 45 hours of DRE-approved continuing education consisting of:

1.) Either 12 hours of continuing education courses in the following subjects: (Ethics, Agency, Trust Fund Handling, and Fair Housing OR one six-hour course that covers the four mandatory subjects (Ethics, Agency, Trust Fund Handling, and Fair Housing);
2.) One three-hour course in Risk Management; and
3.) A minimum of 18 hours of consumer protection courses; and
4.) The remaining clock hours required to complete the 45-hours of continuing education related to either consumer service or consumer protection courses.

70 years or older in “good standing” for 30 continuous years.

Real Estate licensees that are 70 years of age or older and have been licensees in good standing for 30 continuous years in California are exempt from the continuing education requirements for license renewal. To request a continuing education exemption complete and Exemption Request (RE213)
